Institutions

Drehbuchforum Wien

The first choice in Austria for screenplay-related issues. The Drehbuchforum offers basic information and service as well as diverse funding programs and information sessions regarding funding. More information at their website.

Drehbuchverband Austria

The screenplay union (Drehbuchverband) acts in the interests of all Austrian screenplay writers as well as for any screenplay author working in Austria. One might say the Drehbuchforum’s central concern is taking good care of the needs of the screenplay, while that of the Drehbuchverband is taking good care of its writer.

Austrian Film Institute

The Austrian Film Institute (ÖFI) is the most important and influential film funding source in Austria. Most crucially, one can apply here for funding for screenplays, in contrast to the Filmfonds Wien (see below). Their website has a lot of other information important to those in the industry.

Vienna Film Fund

The Vienna Film Foundation is the most crucial program for film funding within Austria other than the Film Institute; however, the Foundation only accepts applications for project and production funding. Nevertheless, its website offers a lot of useful information for the industry, albeit from a Vienna-centered perspective.

Bundesministerium für
Unterricht, Kunst und Kultur,
Abteilung Film

The Film Department of the Austrian Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture offers the so-called “small film sponsorship” with a maximum amount of €5,000 per award for screenplays. It’s an important place to know for up-and-coming authors, as well as for the realization of less costly film projects.

Online Scripts

Research Portal - Scripts

Here is a selection of sites and links to screenplay collections available for downloading free of charge. The descriptions don’t necessarily do the respective sites full justice; just click and check ...

Wickybook - How To Write A Script

This website isn’t as dumb as its title makes it sound. Of course it’s absurd to think it’s possible to learn everything one needs to know to write a screenplay from one site. Nevertheless, you’ll find an impressively compact overview of the basics that’s as good as any of those ‘How to write and sell the most awesome screenplay of all time’ types of books.

Witty

Telepolis

This site refers to itself as the Mecca for German-language cultural studies, which pretty much hits the mark. It has very little to do with screenplays per se, but is definitely the most interesting online-magazine for media studies. It’s loaded with well-researched articles on current political, cultural and academic topics and other media phenomena – so much so that it makes not knowing German perhaps a tiny bit more frustrating!
